i dont like freeforums.org atall forumotion.net gives you much more freedom with design, versions, etc... and has practically no ads.
but hmm
maybe if you tried contacting freeforums.org's support people they can help you out.

One thing that is awesome though is the wicked triangle symbol for when there's new posts on a sticky thread, it looks very LOTP.

No you definitely can't change it back. I can change it to a greyish theme but even then it's fucking disgusting as you can't choose to customise it, only select from a set theme. The only way you can customise styles is if you pay $50 a year n shit, which is silly, and even then I don't know how much you can customise it.

Also Hewett put the old logo back.

that sounds like a good idea but electric_dave said he would have to pay 50 a year for any customizations. looks like the only reasonable way to do it is to change a host
